The Computer Controlled Smart Grids Application, “AEL-BSGC”, has been designed to study smart grids in the fields of generation, transmission, distribution, and consumption. It enables students and researchers to analyze the complete energy flow from production to consumption, identifying problems and solutions throughout the system. The unit includes a 1 kVA synchronous generator-motor group, where the generator is coupled to an induction motor controlled by a variable frequency drive, allowing simulation of real power generation conditions. Both speed and excitation current can be manually or automatically controlled via an advanced AVR, enabling detailed studies of synchronization, voltage regulation, and stability.

The system also includes a transmission line module designed with variable parameters (resistance, inductance, and capacitance), allowing users to simulate different line lengths and capacitive effects, and to evaluate their impact on energy transport. Two bidirectional smart meter simulators are included to monitor energy losses, voltages, powers, and currents across the transmission line. To simulate real consumption scenarios, the unit includes resistive, inductive, and capacitive loads to provoke instability and analyze how the smart grid restores balance automatically.

Finally, the unit is supplied with a SCADA Control and Data Acquisition System that replicates a real substation. It enables real-time control of speed, voltage, synchronization with the grid, and protection system behaviors such as overspeed, voltage drops, reverse power, and generator overloads. It also allows monitoring and data logging of electrical parameters for deeper analysis of the generation, transmission, and consumption processes.
